Guenther Oettinger is a German former member of the European Commission (2014-2019).1

In November 2020, Oettinger started working for communication consultancy Kekst CNC2, which lists Phillip Morris International as one of its clients.3

Oettinger’s case is an example of the Revolving Door tactic.

In February 2021 the European Ombudsman opened a case regarding Oettinger’s new role, calling for the Commission to review its commitment to FCTC guidelines on tobacco industry interference in light of the upcoming Tobacco Products Directive Revision.4

The Commission stressed that Oettinger’s role with Kekst CNC was approved under the condition that he would refrain from direct or indirect lobbying activities.5
