Relationship with the Tobacco Industry

Accepted Tobacco Hospitality

In 2014, Field accepted two tickets, and associated hospitality, for the Men’s final at Wimbledon on 6 July 2014 from Imperial Tobacco, valued at about
£1,600 in total.1 For more information on the tobacco industry tactic to offer hospitality to those with influence over the passage of tobacco laws, see Tobacco Industry Hospitality for UK Politicians.

Opposed Tobacco Control Measures in UK

Against Plain Packaging

Field opposed the UK Government when it announced plans to introduce plain packaging, arguing that the plans should be “resisted as a matter of principle by all Conservatives”.2
Echoing tobacco industry arguments against plain packaging, Field claimed that: “The enforced introduction of plain packaging would infringe fundamental legal rights routinely afforded to international business, erode British intellectual property and brand equity and would create a dangerous precedent for the future of commercial free speech.”
Field added: “I suspect plain packaging will result in other sorts of negative impacts, including the increased health threat posed by counterfeit tobacco, the encouragement of smuggled products and damaging competition.” 3
