Jörg Schappei was Senior Vice President for Human Resources at Japan Tobacco International (JTI) from 2001 to 2016 when he left the tobacco company.12

Career in the Tobacco Industry

Schappei is a Doctor of Law and holds a Master of Law in European Management and Industrial Relations, as well as an MBA in General Management.1 He joined RJ Reynolds International (which later became JTI) as Legal Counsel in Germany in 1982.1 He moved to Human Resources in 1988 and progressed from Vice President of Human Resources in Germany to the whole of Europe1
From 1996 to 2000, Schappei held the position of President and Chairman of the Employers Association for the German Cigarette Industry which focused on trade union, works council relations and collective agreement negotiations.1
