Jacob Sullum is the Senior Editor of the Reason Magazine, the oldest media channel owned by the Reason Foundation, an American libertarian think tank.1

Relationship with the Tobacco Industry

The Reason Foundation has a history of receiving donations from tobacco companies.23 It has promoted anti-tobacco regulation messages, in relation to tax measures, plain packaging, regulations to control E-cigarette use and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and its implementation.4567891011
Sullum has been an employee of the Foundation since the late 1980s. From the early part of his career, his work focused on tobacco and drugs.1213 He has written two books: For Your Own Good: The Anti-Smoking Crusade and the Tyranny of Public Health (1998) and Saying Yes: In Defense of Drug Use (2003). These books and his other publications have been used by the tobacco industry to lobby against tobacco control measures.141516
There is no evidence of any financial arrangement between the tobacco industry and Sullum. However, internal industry documents reveal that he engaged in several discussions with Philip Morris International and RJ Reynolds about smoking regulations.141718
