Professor Ernesto Savona is the Director of Transcrime, a collaborative research group between the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and the University of Trento.1
Savona has been Professor of Criminology at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore since 2003.2 Prior to his present role, he was Professor of Criminology at the Faculty of Law at the University of Trento from 1986 to 2002.

* … to the United Nations, Council of Europe, the European Union and various national governments.
* In May 1998, the British Presidency of the European Union, implementing a recommendation of the Action Plan against Organised Crime, invited him among other “eminent European academics” to deliver a paper on the present situation of organised crime in Europe.
* In 2012, he became a member of the EU Commission experts group on “Policy Needs for Data on Crime & Criminal Justice” and was appointed for the next five years. Together with five other internationally renowned experts, Savona will be consulted for the definition of Community policies, which aims to give policy makers a better comprehension of the impact and effects of Community interventions on the criminal phenomena.

* From 1990 to 1994, he was visiting fellow and project director at the National Institute of Justice, Research Centre of the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Washington D.C, where he was manager of two projects on organised crime and international money laundering.
Scholar
* He has been a visiting professor at the Yale Law School, Oxford (Wolfson College) and Cambridge (Dept. of Criminology) and is an honorary fellow of Cardiff University.
Received Funding from Philip Morris International
In 2011, Transcrime received funding from Philip Morris International (PMI) for three PhD studentships in Criminology.3
Later in 2012, Transcrime produced three reports for PMI which suggested that regulation such as Packaging plain packaging, if passed, would increase the illicit trade in tobacco products.456
* On the first two days of October 2012, Professor Savona and a colleague from Transcrime, Dr Francesco Calderoni met with PMI executives in Lausanne “to discuss the research activities developed by Transcrime.”7
* In May 2013, Calderoni attended a Stakeholder Workshop “The EU’s Illegal Tobacco Market” organised by Euractiv with the support of PMI.8

Speaker at Tobacco Industry Event
In 2015, Savona was an invited speaker at the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum, an annual tobacco industry event previously known as the Global Tobacco Networking Forum.9 See also:
