Carlo Sacchetto has been the Secretary General of Fetratab, which is the European Federation of Tobacco Growers, since 2006. He is also the Secretary General of ELTI – the European Leaf Tobacco Interbranch Organization. According to his LinkedIn profile1 Sacchetto’s professional appointments also include:

  • 2014 – present: Secretary, Interbranch Organization Tabacco Italia
  • 2000 – present: Secretary, APTI (Italian Association of Tobacco Processors)
  • Lobbying against the EU Tobacco Products Directive

Sacchetto lobbied against the EU Tobacco Products Directive Revision (TPD), as Fetratab was one of several third parties that were part of Philip Morris International’s campaign to undermine the TPD. 2

Part of Italian Delegation at the Sixth Session of the WHO Conference of the Parties

Despite Sacchetto’s background in representing pro-tobacco interests, he was chosen by the Italian government to be part of the official Italian delegation to the Sixth Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in Moscow in October 2014.3 The Italian Government has had previously sent industry-friendly delegations . This is a favoured strategy amongst the tobacco industry as it attempts to get pro-industry delegates through lobbying the government. At the Fifth Session of the COP in 2012, the Italian delegation included a former executive of the Italian Tobacco Producers’ Association. 4

    Speaker at Tobacco Industry Event

In 2015, Sacchetto was an invited speaker at the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum, an annual tobacco industry event previously known as the Global Tobacco Networking Forum.5 See also:
