A new STOP article exposes how Philip Morris International (PMI) is sponsoring this year’s International Conference on the future of Asia, in a likely attempt to undermine the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and gain access to influential world leaders and academics.

PMI’s CEO, Jacek Olczak, is registered as a panellist to discuss sustainable growth in Asia, despite the tobacco industry’s history of undermining the goals of sustainable growth, including using child labour, causing environmental destruction, influencing science and undermining public health policies.

The authors call for caution that PMI’s involvement in the conference may undermine efforts to prevent industry interference, allow the company to target consumers in the region, and potentially put participants in violation of FCTC provisions.
