Louis C. Camilleri

Louis Carey Camilleri was the non-executive Chairman of the Board of Philip Morris International (PMI) from January 2015 to December 2020 when he stepped down for personal reasons.1
Previously, he was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and executive Chairman of the Board of PMI between 2008 and 2014.2 He retired officially from PMI on 31 December 2014, but remained non-executive Chairman of the tobacco company.

Long-Standing Career in the Tobacco Industry

Prior to his employment with PMI, Camilleri was Chairman and CEO of the Altria Group. Joining the company in 1978, Camilleri held various posts with the company and its subsidiaries, including:

  • Chairman of Kraft Foods Inc. between September 2002 and March 2007
  • Director of Kraft Foods Inc. between March 2001 and December 2007
  • Chief Financial Officer of Altria between November 1996 and April 2002



Camilleri was appointed CEO of Ferrari in July 2018, replacing Sergio Marchionne.3
He has been a Ferrari Board member since October 2015.45 Ferrari’s 2016 annual report documented that Camilleri earned an annual remuneration of €214,987 for this role.6

Camilleri has said that having been a tobacco executive has been useful for running Ferrari, as both involve “managing a company which is part of an industry going through major transformation and how to keep ahead of that transformation”.8


Camilleri served as Director of beer company SABMiller from 2002 to 2004.
