Andrew Rosindell became the Conservative Member for Parliament (MP) for Romford (England) in June 2001.

Relationship with the Tobacco Industry

Hosted Event on Behalf of Tobacco Industry

On 25 October 2017, Rosindell hosted a reception at Parliament on behalf of the Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association (TMA).1 The event promoted the TMA’s Illicit Tobacco Trade Survey 2017. The TMA’s data on illicit tobacco trade has previously been found to give a much higher estimate of illicit tobacco than the data from the UK government.2

Accepted Tobacco Hospitality

In August 2011 Rosindell accepted two tickets and associated hospitality to the England vs India cricket test match at the Oval, worth £1,447.50, from Japan Tobacco International (JTI).3
JTI spent £23,000 entertaining MPs in the UK in six months during 2011.4

Opposed Tobacco Control Measures in the UK

Called for Review of Smoking Ban

Rosindell has a mixed record when it comes to his position on the indoor smoking ban. He voted in favour of the ban5 but in July 2010 signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling for a review.6

Voted Against Bill Banning Smoking in Cars Carrying Children

In June 2011, Rosindell voted against a Private Member’s Bill banning smoking in cars carrying children.7 The bill was supported by the British Lung Foundation.8
However, in February 2014 he voted in favour of an amendment to the Government’s Children and Families Bill, which made it an offence to smoke in a vehicle when a person under 18 was present.9

Affiliations

Rosindell is member of The Freedom Association (TFA), a libertarian campaign group.1011
In 2010, Rosindell supported an Early Day Motion (EDM) which criticised the BBC for labelling the TFA as a “a very, very right-wing kind of sub-BNP British National Party, slightly posher version of the BNP”. The EDM stated that this description of the TRA was “completely untrue”.12
