Andreas Vecchiet worked for British American Tobacco (BAT) from 1999 to 2010.1
Career in the Tobacco Industry
Vecchiet started working for BAT in 1999 and held several leadership positions in the company, including:1
- Australasia Area Director Corporate and Regulatory Affairs (2006-2010)
- Area Director, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, BAT Germany (2004-2006)
- Integration Manager, BAT Italia (2003-2004)
- Privatisation Manager, BAT Italia (2001-2003)
- International Political Affairs Manager (1999-2001)
In his role as Privatisation Manager, Vecchiet oversaw BAT’s acquisition of the Italian tobacco monopoly.23
Worked with Priti Patel
During his time as BAT’s International Political Affairs Manager, Vecchiet worked closely with Priti Patel, who at the time was seconded to BAT from public relations consultancy Weber Shandwick.4
Patel became a Member of UK Parliament in 2010, and a UK government minister in 2016.
Among other things, Vecchiet and Patel worked together in 2000 on coordinating BAT’s response to the WHO negotiations to establish the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.56
Revolving Door
Vecchiet served as an Australian diplomat in Indonesia from 1993 to 1996, and an adviser to two Labour governments from 1990 to 1994.17
