Howard A. Willard III was Chairman, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Altria from May 2018 until his retirement from the company in April 2020.1 He was replaced as CEO by William Gifford and as Chairman of the Board by Thomas Farrell.2

Long Standing Career with the Tobacco Industry

Willard joined Philip Morris USA (a subsidiary of Altria) in 1992. Since then he has had several leading positions, including:3

  • Chief Operating Officer, Altria (2015-2018)
  • Chief Financial Officer, Altria (2011 – 2015)
  • Executive Vice President of Corporate Responsibility, Philip Morris USA
  • Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, Philip Morris USA

Affiliations

From 2009 to 2015, Willard was a non-Executive Director at alcohol company SABMiller.
